Leisure
time activities play an important part in the lives of Atmore
residents. A pleasant climate, numerous annual events and
excellent city recreational facilities which include tennis courts,
walking trails and swimming pools provide a variety of activities.
The newly created Atmore
Heritage Park on Main Street with it's
relocated historic buildings is a unique setting for new events.
West of town, the Atmore
Country Club offers members and
their guests a beautiful nine hole course to play and enjoy.
Nearby
rivers and woodlands teeming with trophy game will satisfy the demands
of
the sportsman who enjoys fishing or hunting.
For the youth of the community, the Atmore
Area YMCA
provides a full range of programs such as soccer, basketball,
tee-ball, dance, gymnastics and martial arts. After-school
programs and summer day camps are also available with activities
planned by the experienced YMCA staff. A variety of exercise
classes, free weights and a fitness center are available for use by
seniors and adults alike. The YMCA offers a nursery service, if
needed.
The City of Atmore also offers an
extensive recreational program which includes tee-ball, girls fastpitch
softball,
youth baseball, pee wee football, tennis and swimming lessons.
Four
city parks with new playground equipment and picnic sites serve the
citizens of Atmore.
Atmore
is fortunate to have two wilderness areas, and Little River State
ForestMagnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve,
within 20 minutes of Atmore. Each offer amenities such as
improved and primitive campsites, swimming, camping, fishing
and
hiking. Little River State Forest is a 960 acre park that
includes a 25 acre lake. Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve,
located on beautiful Escambia Creek, is owned and operated by the
Poarch Creek Indians and is a popular destination for tubing.
The Greater
Escambia Council for
the Arts, presents theatrical productions which showcase talent
from all segments of the community. Or movie buffs might enjoy
the Strand
Theater in
downtown
Atmore which offers current movies in one of the few small town movie
theaters remaining.
Located north of town, just off I-65 are two sport opportunities with
great appeal for those who like their entertainment fast. The Atmore Dragway,
an eighth-mile
track, attracts race car enthusiasts from across the southeast, and the
Atmore
Motocross Park
offers motorcycle and ATV riding and racing on an "outdoors nature
style" track.
Or, try your luck at Wind Creek
